Subject: Re: ink pen

Thirty years ago, I knew a young man from Idaho, who habitually used "ink

pen" for what, to me (having grown up in Alberta), was just a "pen." I

razzed him constantly, and he insisted that the term was necessary to

distinguish between the various types of writing instruments.

In his dialect, the pronunciations of "pin" and "pen" were certainly

distinct; he did not use "ink pen" to distinguish it from a "pin."
