Funny, as I was putting the dishes away the other day, I thought of the

word "stewer" for the first time in ages. My grandmother said it (b.

1898, rural west Georgia, small farm). It was another of those things

she said that was not easily interpreted by me as a child. It was years

before I could analyze it morhpologically as stew + er; I imagined it as

steuer or something, I guess. One of those words one rarely encounters

in writing.
