Teaching transcription in HEL or in the Structure of P-D English to

students in Central Georgia is always somewhat of a confusing chore because

textbooks use examples that do not correspond to native pronunciation, but

the confusion this morning in HEL was complicated by Charles Barber's use

of RP to illustrate the sounds represented by symbols. Usually, I have to

rely on some non-native speakers in the class for illustrations of

variation in pronunciation, but the textbook provided all the variation we

needed.
