Here's the last word on eponym, according to the 1995 ed. of the Random

House Webster's Dictionary:



sense 2, dated from 1840-50: "a word based on or derived from a person's name."



And BTW, this new dictionary has the distinction of being the first to

define as one sense of Webster: informal, "A dictionary of the English

language."
