I've tried Wardhaugh, and students tend to yawn (though I like it). In January
for an intro course (students had no background in linguistics or
sociolinguistics) I used Holmes, "An introduction to sociolinguistics", with an
extra chapter from Romaine and one from Wardhaugh. Students liked the book a
lot.
