Maybe the hulves as plural of hoof was subliminal interference

from calf - calves , since calves (for which the l is "silent") have

hooves. Maybe sort of like the l in could . Analogy produces interesting

results sometimes.



And let's not forget that there's another legitimate English word that

might be providing the interference as well, one in which the /l/ IS

pronounced: the surname Holmes (as in Sherlock).
