<br>I would recommend Dorothy Allison's novel *Bastard out of Carolina*.
<br>It is partly autobiographical. The author also discusses her
<br>"white trash" upbringing in *Skin: Sex, Class, and Literature*
<br>where she discusses a variety of prejudices, including against certain
<br>sexual practices (very explicit, consider yourself warned).
<br>
<br>She tells how she has moved from shame, to an in-your-face type of
<br>attitude about her background, to self-acceptance.
<br>
