Is this marvelous cleaning device and sight saver recommended for
glass-covered CRT screens only, or will it work on the softer laptop
screens, which appear to be much more vulnerable to schmutz and
destruction?

Yes, the instructions said that although you should clean the sponge itself
with warm water, you should always use it
dry.
