Subject: The Great Unwashed



(Apologies to subscribers of both lists!) I'm looking for the origin of the

term "the Great Unwashed." I read it someplace recently and promptly forgot

it. I thought it might have been in John Carey's *The Intellectuals and the Masses*, but when I went back to that source, I couldn't find it. Can anybody

help me?
