Subject: spelling of dufus



I have a professional interest in the spelling of this word: Breathed says it's

Doofus. I think the proper etymology is from the Popeye character Dufus. I do

NOT accept the authority of any of the few dictionaries opining on the subject.



Anyone know the origin of this word?
