Wayne,

    Maybe the <hulves> as plural of <hoof> was subliminal interference

from <calf> - <calves>, since calves (for which the <l> is "silent") have

hooves. Maybe sort of like the <l> in <could>. Analogy produces interesting

results sometimes.
