  Well, DInIs, we Deep Northerners do say "used to be able to"--I heard
  no other way until I moved to Ohio! (And you don't get any deeper
  North than western Minnesota and Fargo; the scenes of snows and floods
  in "Monte" and Granite Falls, MN are from my neck of the woods--I grew
  up near the Yellow Medicine River, which flows into the Minnesota,
  which flows into the Mississippi....)
