Presumably the "traditional" pronunciation /baed/ is not all that old; the

e on the end would indicate a preceding long vowel, something like [a:].

The current /beyd/ pronunciation must be a sort of spelling pronunciation

resulting from the school rule that a final e "makes a letter say its

name." (!)
