My Grandmother used to say it as an endearing or diminutive when referring

to a child. I may have picked it up from her. This would be Louisville

area or S. Ind. I note that German diminutives -chen/-lein/-li are all

used with the neuter gender, tho I kind of doubt there is a relationship.
