My parents were raised in Weimar, TX, in the 30's, but moved to San Antonio in the early 50's. As children in the 50's and 60's in San Antonio, we always begged for monkey blood when we had a cut or scratch--the alternative was Merthiolate, which stung like hell. My mother would give us monkey blood; my father insisted on the effectiveness of Merthiolate. I was always impressed when my father would rinse his mouth out with Merthiolate when he had a mouth ulcer.
