Dennis,

The OED says the /u:/ is common in England, and attributes the

lowering (or retention thereof) to the influence of the -/r/, but considering

it a more "vulgar" pronunciation. Interesting, but not surprisingly, I've

never heard the /u:/ (or /uw/, as I prefer to write it).
