The fundamental problem is, as we all know but rarely admit (who would hire

us if they believed it), there is not and never has been such a thing as

"the English language." But let's not tell anyone.

Variation is one thing, Don; irreversible total systemic loss of

a distinction is another. It is really dysfunctional. Says something about

the peculiar illogical habit of people over time to try to make communication

more difficult.
