All the more reason to deep-six the term "mixing" which IS used pejoratively among almost any population of code- switchers and the monolinguals around them who stigmatize what they are doing. This a SERIOUS sociolinguistic issue. Social scientists are not living in a social vacuum, and are responsible for the consequences of their actions. If their jargon reinforces popular negative stereotypes, they should be aware of this and change the jargon. It is NOT socially neutral, no matter how neutral they may imagine themselves to be. It is as if the terminology of some sociologists led to people in need being cut off from support and dying of hunger, and having the sociologists declare that they were innocent because they were "scientists". Being a scientist does not absolve one of social responsibilities. --Rudy Troike
