I also am persuaded by his arguments. I came into linguistics by way of dialect geography (thank you, Roger SHuy, Fred Cassidy, Gary Underwood, and Raven McDavid) and early sociolinguistics (thank you, Roger Shuy, Gary Underwood, and Bill Stewart) and through the Int'l Conferences in Canada with early professional membership in ADS. I would LOVE to be back in the fold. But several years ago it became clear that I could not both honor a primary commitment to linguistics and also remain active in MLA. So I opted for LSA with all that that has implied in terms of conference attendance. (And MLA really is too big and really does meet at a dreadful time of year.)
