Specifically, I am looking for a descriptive work on the phonological and syntactic characteristics of Southern dialect(s). Even fairly old references would be welcome if they were done from the standpoint of descriptive linguistics. Of course there are plenty of prosaic and pre-theoretical descriptions of Southern speech, but I'm looking for something rigorous done by a linguist. Works on a specific dialect within what we consider "Southern English" would be welcome, or works on Southern English in general. Thanks! - Tony Wright St. Philip's College San Antonio, Texas
