I like David's explanation of the "brass monkey." I never could figure out
what an ornamental monkey would have been doing out in the cold anyway. I
first heard the expression (as an adult) from my father, a retired gunner, so
presumably he knew what it meant (not that he was old enough to have fired
canons himself!).
