Stockton is a fairly common name throughout the US in the 19th cent. for a
town to which cattle were driven for sale or slaughter or trans-shipment.
I've been in a couple of them, and a couple of my wife's relatives lived in
one. My guess from my experience is that they are usually pretty muddy,
dusty, pedestrian (hoofestrian?) places that might well get nicknamed
"mudville." Good luck, though I guess the caveats given on the name are
still not completely empty.
