To some extent, there has taken over some of the territory of

expletive it as used in early Modern English. One of my favorite bits

of evidence for this "relexification" was a comment by a "man-in-the

street" in London interviewed while Americans were on the moon, who

after decrying the cost, was asked if he cared about the success of the

mission, and replied, "Of course. There's people up there, isn't it?"
