Suppose the EEZes got their start with *thesis, theses* where normal

pronunciation with unstressed schwa in second syllable would obliterate the

written singular-plural distinction. And what word would more likely call for

pedantic hyper-spelling-pronunciation than *theses*?

Then the EEZ felt so good that it spread to other academic/scientific terms

where the written form was primary.
