"socks and shoes" is not (exclusively, at least) british--that's what

we say in my part of new york state. do people really say "i'm going

to put on my shoes and socks?" sounds rather uncomfortable.



all the conjunction rules have failed to explain to me why we have

the twin cities of champaign-urbana, illinois, wherein there is the

university of illinois at urbana-champaign.
