Subject: overheard in the elevator

I was riding the elevator at lunch time today, and heard someone

say, when asked how he was, that he was "this close to going postal."

The conversation then went as follows:

Questioner: Not in this elevator, please.

Third man: Let's talk about that later.

Questioner: Postal is bad.

The "postal" guy (agreeing): Postal is bad.

I think this is the first time I've heard postal used by itself

as an adjective in this sense (obviously, it's adjectival in form

and in older senses like "postal service").

The elevator, by the way, is in midtown Manhattan, and used primarily

by employees of Viacom.
