Subject: The fading of [hw]

I'm sitting here grading papers from my English lit survey class and

laughed at my image of either a Jonah-type or a Circean-type scene

when I read that the Celts "were attacked by the Anglo-Saxons and

forced into Whales." So I guess [hw] is fading even here in Mississippi,

where I had assumed almost everybody used it.

OTOH, maybe the "Whales" in that paper came from the same mysterious source

that produced a statement in a different paper that "Middle English literature

reflected all people from aristocrats to pheasants."
