<br>     The RHHDAS has a first citation of 1859 ("conoodle") and has "origin
<br>unknown."  RHHDAS also quotes the 1889 Barrere & Leland.  As stated before,
<br>Charles Leland wrote the "Hans Breitmann" tales that created German dialect
<br>comedy in America.  If "canoodle" is a German dialect word, then "Breitmann"
<br>used it.  That's the place to look--simple as that.  In fact, he has a
<br>glossary!
<br>     Let's check the apartment--do I have "Breitmann" underneath this sofa?
