Another question for you real phoneticians out there. Is there any
character in the IPA that would represent what Pyles and Algeo call the
Indo-European *palatal k? I don't want to use /k/, because it might confuse
my students. The IPA chart on the end papers of Pyles/Algeo has /c/ as a
palatal plosive--is that the same as the IE sound? Close enough? Would /c/
represent the sound of the first k in kick , or is it something different
altogether?

You know, years ago, my mother used to say to me, she'd say, "In this
world, Elwood, you must be . . ."--she always called me 'Elwood'--"In this
world, Elwood, you must be oh, so smart or oh, so pleasant." Well, for
years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. And you may quote me.
