Sorry to be unfamiliar with Jakobson's remarks, but if we're going to get picky, they couldn't have much predated the detailed study by Yakov Malkiel, "Studies in Irreversible Binomials", Lingua 8 (1959): 113-60. And I imagine Panini's analysis anteceded both by a couple thousand years or so. Larry
