I believe yoke refers to any crossbar carried across the shoulders to

support two equal weights, usually buckets, on each side of the person.

A yoke normally has a frame to fit the traverse pole to the carrier's

neck and shoulder, but it may refer to a simpler apparatus like the

Chinese one as well. Perhaps this is a place to start in any case. As

you probably know, the most common meaning for yoke is a device to join

two draft animals, usually oxen.
