Re American Tongues. The young man was indeed Italian, and his accent was a

source of embarrassment to his brothers and sisters (who also had South Boston

accents). I use the film in my introduction to sociolinguistics class and the

students always get a kick out of the way the young man justifies his use of

some of the most highly stigmatized forms.
