Thanks for the wisdom. I especially appreciate the German anecdote. We

tend to forget just how ambitious this country is in terms of education

as compared to Europe (or even the USA in the earlier part of the 20th

century!).



I WOULD like to point out that several ADS linguists have been active in

NCTE, e.g., Allan Metcalf, Natalie Maynor, Walt Wolfram, and Dennis

Barton. We should all follow their lead. I confess that I haven't been to

an NCTE meeting for yeaRS (since I gave up directing Freshman English at

Duke!)
