P.S. On batters really nailing it: It occurs to me that the two-possible-

outcomes idea doesn't quite work here at least without modification, since a

batter can nail the ball and the ball can be caught or go foul; all that's im-

plied is that s/he hit it very hard, with the meat of the bat, as intended.

That does seem different from the other sports usages, where a successful out-

come is entailed. --Larry
