Subject: Re: text for language and gender
If you are focusing on lg. variation in the class, the small book by
Jennifer Coates (Longman) *Women, Men, and Language* is great. I
especially like the first chapter on what people, from das Volk to
Jesperson and beyond, have said historically about gendered lg. diffs.
For a more general text, both in terms of audience interest and
covering a wider range of socioling. topics, including more on
discourse, lg. socialization, lg. and power, etc, I like Tannen's *You
just don't understand* for undergrads.
