After 1815 he worked together with his brother, Wilhelm Karl Grimm, on the great Deutsches Worterbuch. This is the fundamental work in comparative German philology, of which specific branch he may be called the founder. Its principal terminology originated with him, and one of its most characteristic phrases, though first formulated by Rask, bears the name of Grimm's law.
