I conducted a similar "survey" at a party during the weekend, all faculty

members or spouses. Only one person knew the old maid usage. She considers

Georgia her home, but she has lived in most parts of the US and parts of

Europe as the daughter of a career soldier. Others from Mississippi, New

York, Maryland, etc., didn't know it. GWW
