Born January 18, 1779: Peter Mark Roget. English writer and physician. He

was for many years secretary of the Royal Society. His chief work is the

notable _Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases_ (1852), a work for which he

collected material for 50 years, and which has been revised and reprinted many

times since its first appearance.
