I guess it is general if you have grown up hearing it all the time but to a Yankee it was not what I was used to. Also, we never used the term 'tote' to mean to transport something by hand. We'd carry in a load of fire wood. Or, perhaps we'd carry our books home, not tote them. Also, I never thought of taking someone somwhere as an act of force, but now that you mention it, that too makes sense. It's all in the way you look at it I guess.
