Holden Caulfield's expression in "Catcher in the Rye" was "give her the
(old) time." I don't remember whether the "old" was optional or
obligatory. I never heard this term myself outside of the book, and I'm
not sure whether this is simply because I spent my adoloscent years in the
Pacific Northwest and didn't attend a New England boarding school, or
whether it was a literary creation of J.D. Salinger's.
