Subject: nerds

One of our young filmmakers is researching a film on former nerds, i.e.

people who, as children or adolescents, were misfits and "geeks", but who

grew up to be outstanding in one field or other. She has located the people

she wants to interview, but she needs to situate the concept of "nerd"

historically. Does anyone know of any studies on the subject? I have

searched DIALOG databases but have had no luck. My understanding is that

she wants something serious but not full of professional jargon. Many

thanks/
