A student told me that the name was spelled "XTC."



xtc is the name of a band, that was around before ecstasy, the drug,

and which is not associated with the music scene in which the drug

is prevalent. i've never seen it (the drug) spelled this way in the

music press, which is where the drug is often discussed.
