For me, in Seattle and in Portland, "waft" rhymes with "raft" and

"immersion" is pronounced with an /sh/.

Shortly after dispatching my previous message, I received a call from my

mother and I asked her how she would pronounce w-a-f-t. She gave the wahft

pronounciation, so mine likely comes from reading and using analogy to words

like raft.

I happened to use the word "immersion, and she says "immersion" with a /zh/

while I use /sh/, so there may be a generation gap. (I have often wondered

whether Seattle is still going through a sorting out of pronunciations as it

has a large non-native pronounciation.)
