There was a club called "Hotlanta," a venue for loud rock and roll
around 77 or 78; my memory is dim, of course.

I don't remember any special link with gay bars or discos, but do
remember the notion being linked with the Underground. I suggest
checking Creative Loafing or the earlier alternative rag Great
Speckled Bird, if anyone can find copies...
