My _American Heritage Dictionary_ has smelt as the pass tense of smell.

I found that interesting. You might expect to hear "smelt" somewhere back
in the hills, but not from the mouth of an obviously middle class woman in
a commercial made for national distribution. Yet it had to be intentional.
