Subject: TAKEOVER SPECIAL: Hong Kong or Hongkong?

One of these was taken over by China this month:

Hong Kong

Hongkong

HongKong

Hong-Kong

Hongk'ong.

There's a very little bit about this in the Winter 1996 AMERICAN SPEECH,

"Transmission Languages and Source Languages of CHinese Brrowings in English"

by Andrew J. Moody, pg. 413.

I bank at Marine Midland, which is owned by the Hongkong and Shanghai

Bank Corp., or HSBC.

A check of News Abstracts shows:

Hong Kong--2,663 hits.

Hongkong--86 hits (mostly HSBC).

A recent book title is _T'aiwan, Hongk'ong, Mak'ao (=Taiwan, Hong Kong,

Macao)_ by Chae-gi Hi (1991).

It probably should be Hongkong, but Hong Kong is here to stay.

Just don't let the Chinese get Hawai'i.
