Subject: Double modals up north.

Macomb Illinois is on the same latitudewith Keokuk, Iowa, about 60 miles

SW of Peoria.

Yesterday a lady came to our house to discuss hanging new wallpaper.

She had none of the "South Midland " speech which, I have observed

elsewhere, rural people use around here. She coulda been a Peoria native.

I did a double take when she said "I might could even put a [border up

there].

I bracketed the last part because I wasn't sure about the border part.

But the point is, I've always thought the double modal was strictly Southern.

Deep, coastal southern. Any other northern attestations?
