Macomb Illinois is on the same latitudewith Keokuk, Iowa, about 60 miles SW of Peoria. Yesterday a lady came to our house to discuss hanging new wallpaper. She had none of the "South Midland " speech which, I have observed elsewhere, rural people use around here. She coulda been a Peoria native. I did a double take when she said "I might could even put a [border up there]. I bracketed the last part because I wasn't sure about the border part. But the point is, I've always thought the double modal was strictly Southern. Deep, coastal southern. Any other northern attestations? Tim Frazer
