I don't know the explanation for the male orientation of Jr./Sr., I/II, etc.,

but I do know of one case that may mean things are changing. We had a student

here a couple of years ago from New York City who went by "Shirley Williams

Jr." and claimed that was in fact her given name. Maybe we are on our way to

eliminating the gender-exclusive nature of this, too?
