On a related topic, at least pragmatically, we have words in English which
have no fixed referent per se except that they be given one ad hoc at the
moment of utterance, and which are really nothing but fossilized worldview
attitudes. I refer to *weeds*, *pests* and *vermin*. Since I use these in
my Intro to Language class, I wonder if anyone can come up with others.
